From the bustling markets of Marrakesh to the Atlas mountains, this trip combines city site seeing and mountain trekking. This action packed trip will immerse you in maze-like Marrakesh, introduce you to the culture of Amazigh (Berber) and see you summit Mount Toubkal 4167meters above sea level.
Trek from Imlil to Toubkal base camp through the sublime and craggy landscape of the Atlas Mountains. Pass the pilgrimage site of Sidi Chamarouchou and marvel at the spectacular scenery across the mountain range with the help and guidance of the local team along with a trusty pack of mules.
After a good night sleep at the refuge we will hopefully go for sunrise (weather dependant) and tackle the steep rocky climb to the summit and earn magnificent views over the high Atlas Mountains.
To reach the summit; you do need to be reasonably fit and healthy.
Duration - 4 Days Difficulty - Medium Scenery - Excellent
Day One – Travel – Marrakesh – Imlil Village – 1.5 Hours
Land in Marrakesh and be greeted by Nic for the private transfer to Imlil. Imlil is a small mountain village located in the heart of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountain Range, tucked away in the beautiful Toubkal valley.
Once checked in and settled in the mountain lodge, we will have a small 2 ½ hour acclimatisation hike in preparation for our trek to Base camp.
Day Two – Imlil 1800m – Mount Toubkal Refuge (Base Camp) 3207m
After a good night sleep and hearty breakfast, we start our trek up to the refuge, passing though the Ait Mizane Valley towards the village of Armed. A traditional village with terraced farming, Berber houses and streets permanently gridlocked with local goats and cattle.
Crossing the floodplain and continuing east, along the rocky mule track and high into the rocky cliffs above the valley. Quick stop for a traditional fresh Berber lunch, we cross the river to arrive at the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarough. Continuing zigzagging our way to Toubkal Refuge (3207m) where we spend the evening.
Day Three – Mount Toubkal Refuge (Base Camp) 3207m – Mount Toubkal Summit 4167m
Early wake up call for breakfast and then we leave to start our ascent. With several stops and short breaks for water and traditional Moroccan snacks we should reach the summit in around 3 - 4 hours, where you can enjoy the magical, beautiful views of Toubkal summit at sunrise (weather dependant).
The descent is a lot faster than the accent down the same path back to the refuge., where you then can rest, re-fuel, reminisce and discuss your experience with other hikers.
Day Four – Mount Toubkal Refuge (Base Camp) 3207m – Imlil Village 1800m - Marrakesh
Today we start the descent after breakfast back down the mountain to Imlil village, where upon arrival we will have lunch before leaving to head to Marrakesh airport.
